COVID-19 and complement system: a window of opportunities

The article reviews foreign literature about the complement system role in COVID-19 and SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) diseases caused by SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV, respectively. The ways of complement activation, the interaction of viral particles with complement components and the possibility of targeted therapy, including the use of monoclonal antibody preparations, are examined. The role of mannose-binding lectin (MBL) and its serum level as the risk degree indicator of infection with mentioned coronaviruses is discussed.
