Features of the course of measles in children of Omsk region, Russia

Despite vaccination the epidemiological situation on measles around the world remains unfavorable. In 2023 there has been an increase in the number of measles cases in Russian Federation up to 8.92 per 100,000 population which significantly exceeded previous records (2022 – 0.07 per 100,000 population). At its current state, the epidemiological process is characterized by small outbreaks or sporadic cases of measles. The purpose of the study was to identify clinical, laboratory and epidemiological features of measles in children in Omsk. The study includes clinical cases of 18 patients with measles who were treated in the pediatric infectious diseases hospital budgetary healthcare institution of Omsk region "City pediatric clinical hospital ¹3" in 2023–2024. All cases underwent laboratory verification. Young children were prevalent among the patients. In most cases epidemiological history showed that patients had family contact with children and adults. For the most part the observed children were not vaccinated. The clinical picture of measles maintained its typical repeating pattern and manifestations. The observed cases were distinguished by the following features: the absence of a catarrhal period in single-vaccinated children, lesions of the gastrointestinal tract in the form of enteritis and abdominal syndrome in two cases. |
